Why does it have to be this hard?

Competing at the Deka Fit challenge

Because life is hard. And we need the pain.

That’s what came out when Kate asked the question at the end of another brutal challenge.

Kate: Why do we do this to ourselves?
Me: Because life is hard and we need the pain.

I didn’t plan that answer. But as soon as I said it, I knew it was true.

The hard stuff is the point

Getting things too easily is a fast track to losing them just as quickly.

But when you put in the work, when you struggle, sweat, fail, and push through, it means more. It lasts.

That’s not being dramatic. That’s just how it works.

The hard stuff is what prepares us for success. Not the comfortable stuff. Not the things that come without resistance. The things that test whether you actually want it.

The reason I started

I started my fitness journey with one goal. I didn’t want to be the dad who couldn’t keep up with his kids.

That was it.

Not aesthetics. Not numbers on a scale. Just being present and capable for the people who matter most.

But over the years I’ve realised that every fitness or competitive challenge I take on does more than build muscle. It builds resilience.

And that same resilience shows up when life hits hard. Not just on the course or in the gym. In the tough conversations, in the moments you’d rather walk away from, in the times when everything feels like it’s pushing back.

Embrace the pain. Embrace the tough times.

It moulds you.
